Location and nature of the place
Fairs in France are held in major centers, including Strasbourg, Colmar, Paris, Lille, Amiens, Metz, Reims, Nice, Dijon, Annecy and Lyon. Each of these cities combines historical elements, such as Gothic townhouses and Baroque palaces, with modern public space arrangements. The result is a unique combination of tradition, regional heritage and creative art forms that give the events a unique character.
A brief history
The tradition of organizing Christmas markets dates back to the 16th century, with the oldest held in Strasbourg, where Christkindelsmärik first appeared. In subsequent centuries, the form of the fairs evolved, and the modern events, developed in the 1990s, became a model for other cities. Inspiration was drawn from both Alpine traditions and German wooden chalets, creating a unique style of "marchés de Noël." Today, the fairs emphasize the identity of the region and provide a meeting space and an authentic Christmas experience.
